Businesses in Cozumel that employ more than 11 people will receive a special reward of 3,000 pesos per employee, said Mexican daily Por Esto! earlier this week. The reward, announced by Gustavo Ortega Joaquín, Mayor of Cozumel, will be paid to companies that did not lay off staff after Wilma.

Carlos Berdegue, CEO of El Cid Resorts, said this week that the El Cid hotel in Cozumel is being "remodelled entirely" and will re-open on 15 March 2006. He explained, "We'll actually be going up a notch in quality" and "our goal is to come back stronger than ever".

It would be very bold and possibly even ridiculous to claim the media has done more damage to Cozumels tourism economy than Hurricane Wilma. But, thats what the media does: it makes bold assertions, posts sensational headlines and makes claims that may have some basis in fact, but are often quite ridiculous.
