lifestyle, travel This is Cozumel

The dream of every diver and snorkeler, Cozumel's Marine Park celebrates its 12th birthday today.

The protected area is home to some of the most beautiful coral reef and marine life in the world.

The Park consists of around 12,000 hectares (29,600 acres) of sea and coastline to the south and west of the island.

According to figures released today by Mexico's National Commission for Protected Natural Areas (CONANP), its waters are currently home to 105 different types of coral and 262 species of fish.

The area was established by Mexican federal decree on July 19, 1996, with the aim to protect and monitor the area.

Today, park staff continue to keep watch, undertake scientific research and organize social education programs for locals and visitors alike.
