The landmark clock tower in Cozumel's main plaza is being given a lick of new paint, ready for the party on Monday. Locals have relied on the timepiece for over 60 years and it is an important part of the island's history.

It was constructed in an unusual manner when President José Hipolito Vivas was in charge of the island. Locals say Vivas made criminals carry rocks to the plaza for the construction of the clock tower instead of paying fines.

Many years and many hurricanes later, and it's still on time.
