The downtown seafront area of Cozumel will soon have free wifi internet for locals and tourists, announced the island's mayor, Aurelio Joaquín González, last month.

Mexican internet and telephone company, Telmex, has agreed to provide the infrastructure, which is expected to be ready by the end of the year.

Telmex clients will enjoy unlimited free access and visitors to the island and other non-clients will also have an hour of free access daily.

The service will work from Punta Langosta cruise ship terminal, all along the seafront as far as the Port Captain's building at the north end, and will also include the downtown square, Parque Benito Juárez.

The service will be of great benefit to tourists with laptops, wifi enabled cellphones and tablet computers, meaning they can connect and find island information quickly from websites such as This is Cozumel.
