Businesses in Cozumel that employ more than 11 people will receive a special reward of 3,000 pesos per employee, said Mexican daily Por Esto! earlier this week. The reward, announced by Gustavo Ortega Joaquín, Mayor of Cozumel, will be paid to companies that did not lay off staff after Wilma.

The paper said that the payments had been authorised by Mexican President, Vicente Fox Quesada, as part of a federal economic project for the south of Mexico. The Mayor said it is important that the Federal Government rewards businesses that maintain full employment so as to soften the economic impact of Wilma on the island.
