Tough Paddling To Cozumel

Those paddling the 30 canoes across the sea to Cozumel, last Friday, had a tough job.

The currents and wind were against them as they took part in this year's historic Travesía Sagrada Maya, or Mayan Sacred Journey.

Training For Sacred Canoe Journey

Choppy training.
  Cozumel teams have started training for the 2011 Sacred Mayan Canoe Crossing between the mainland and the island, which will take place May 19-21.

The trainees got their first taste of choppy seas yesterday, when a north front brought wind to the west side of the island where they train early in the morning.

Gastro-Mania On The Mainland

Organizers announced, this week, that 40 restaurants and bars are now signed up to appear at November's Playa del Carmen Taste of Playa International Food Festival.

This will be the second such culinary congress following the event's huge success last year, and takes place on the mainland just a short ferry ride from Cozumel Island.

Goddesses, Chocolate And Canoes

Delightful chocolate aromas and the smoke of incense mingle in the air with the chatter of Mayan voices and the clink of conch shells being exchanged for food and goods.

This was the traditional Kii’wik market, this week, that started events leading up to some 250 oarsman, in wooden canoes, crossing from the Riviera Maya to Cozumel, and back.

Riviera Maya Airport Really A Go

After many delays, much speculation, and considerable expectation, the process to build the new Riviera Maya airport has finally started.

The Mexican government officially invited bids to construct and operate the new airport, on the coast near Cozumel, earlier this week.

The tender process got off to a false start in March, when Mexican President, Felipe Calderón proudly announced it would begin in April, only for it to be postponed again within days.
