lifestyle, travel This is Cozumel

If you're planning a snorkel boat trip in Cozumel, one of the most common dilemmas is whether to book through your hotel or cruise ship - or go independent.

The short answer? Booking outside the resort or ship usually gives you more flexibility, better value, and a more personalized experience.

If you're staying in the southern hotel zone, many local operators can still pick you up directly at the hotel's pier, if they have one. You'll just need to notify the hotel in advance, and there may be a small access fee per person. It's a minor extra step, but one that opens the door to better deals and more choice.

Or, if you're visiting on a cruise, the meeting point will usually be at one of the marinas close to the cruise piers. There are always lots of safe licensed taxis with English-speaking drivers waiting outside the terminals and it's an easy, short ride away.

Remember to plan the tour times to fit correctly with your ship's port times. If you book through us and would like advice on the timings, contact us before booking and we'll be pleased to help.

Independent bookings also let you choose the type of experience that suits you best. Shared sailing catamarans are a popular option, offering stable rides, plenty of space, shade, and onboard bathrooms for groups of up to around 30 people.

Smaller shared motorboats are usually the best budget option, typically carrying 10–20 guests, some also have a glass-bottom, a window in the hull to see underwater, for those that don't wish to snorkel. They generally have a more intimate feel but sometimes fewer amenities.

Or, if your budget allows, a private boat is the top-tier choice, giving you the freedom to avoid crowds, spend more time in the water, and customize your itinerary.

Most trips visit Cozumel's famous southern reefs like Colombia and Palancar, often including a stop at El Cielo, known for its shallow waters and starfish (look, don't touch!). Nearly all tours include drinks, snorkel gear (including mandatory lifvests in the water), and a guide, with some offering food as well.

If your trip takes you into the waters of the protected nature reserve then there will be a marine park fee to pay as well, typically $10 per person. Check the tour details to see if it is included in the price or payable separately on the day.

In short, booking independently gives you more control, lower prices and often a better overall experience. We offer independent Cozumel snorkel trips, so we would say that wouldn't we? But don't take our word for it, compare with ship and hotel options, and check out the reviews on each tour page too!
