There are lots of myths and misunderstandings about the Day of the Dead, so find out where it really comes from on our exclusive tour, including the connection to the Mayan tradition of Hanal Pixan.
Long before Spanish Catholic traditions arrived, Mexico already honored the dead through ancient pre-Hispanic ceremonies — traditions that would later blend into what we now know as the modern Day of the Dead.
Learn the full story on our unique experience, available from October 30 to November 2, 2025, that will take you on a journey through thousands of years of history — from ancient Mayan legends to sacred funeral customs that still inspire celebrations today.
During this interactive Mayan encounter, you’ll stroll through a recreated village where the vibrant local culture and deep-rooted traditions come to life all around you.
After learning how to paint your face with traditional Mayan designs, your guide will lead you through a series of hands-on workshops set in thatched palapa huts. Here, you’ll uncover the meaning of Hanal Pixan — the Mayan celebration of the dead — and explore its links to the Day of the Dead.
You'll get to see how authentic Hanal Pixan food and drink is made and try some yourself, such as tamales de comal, atole, pan de muerto and agua de chaya.
Next you'll see and learn about calaveras, the traditional skull figures that always form part of Day of the Dead celebrations, before having the chance to make your own pib, a traditional Mayan dish that accompanies the celebrations.
After a short intermission featuring a theatrical Mayan performance complete with smoke and drums, you may even take part in a chocolate-making workshop, grinding cocoa beans by hand just as the Mayans have done for millennia.
The full experience lasts about 60–90 minutes, filled with immersive storytelling and hands-on activities that bring the Mayan world and the Day of the Dead to life.
Before you leave, don’t forget to stop by the charming thatched gift shop — the perfect place to find one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts.
