Carnival events start in Cozumel tonight, with the presentation of the 6 King and Queen candidates at a special ticketed show at the island's Moby Dick concert hall. The aspiring carnival royalty will appear in full costume, dancing to Caribbean and Latin music in a loud, multicolor extravaganza. Challenging to be this year's King are Ricardo Gamboa, Adrián Alvarado and Miguel Chan Esquivel, and in the battle for Queen are Reyna Meneses Peraza, Nadia Alonzo Martín and Leslie Chan. |
All 6 will also make another appearance tomorrow night in a free public event starting at 7pm in the main square downtown (Parque Benito Juárez).
They have another 2 weeks to win the hearts and votes of islanders with more performances before the final vote is made on February 15, 2014. These events form part of Cozumel's "Pre-Carnival" and will be followed by the main events and parades from Wednesday, February 26 to Fat Tuesday, March 4, 2014.
The party concludes on 'Fat Tuesday' with dazzling technicolour processions along Cozumel's downtown seafront. People line the street, dancing with the performers and catching gifts that are showered on them.
After the seafront extravaganza, the music keeps playing and parties continue well into the night. Costumed revellers battle in dancing competitions and bands play live music around the city.
