Passenger traffic at Cozumel airport was 13.9% higher in the second quarter of 2010 than the same period in 2009, said, ASUR, the terminal's owner, yesterday.
The biggest rise was for international flights, with 109,000 passengers arriving in April, May and June 2010, some 14,000 more than the same 3 months last year. The group, which owns 9 Mexican airports including Cancun, said the traffic increase helped their total profits rise over 70%. |
The Cancun terminal has long been the company's cash cow, accounting for almost half the total traffic at all 9 of their airports.

In 2009, ASUR doubled the capacity of Cancun airport by opening a new runway and control tower.
It now challenges Mexico City's airport as the country's busiest flight hub. |

ASUR is also thought to be interested in bidding to build the new Riviera Maya airport on the mainland near Tulum.
