lifestyle, travel This is Cozumel

Cozumel is getting ready for Revolution Day tomorrow, when Mexico celebrates the 100th anniversary of the call to arms made in 1910.

Islanders will remember the lives of lost heroes and celebrate the Revolution with traditional costumes, patriotic events and displays by children and the emergency services.

The date marks the call made by Francisco I. Madero on November 20, 1910, for Mexicans to rise up against the dictatorship of General Porfirio Díaz Mori, who had been in power for 40 years.

The ensuing battles and struggles for power lasted some 20 years. A revolutionary period when alliances and leaders kept changing, and attempts at stable government failed.

Relative stability was finally reached in 1920, with the presidency of Álvaro Obregón who stayed in power for 4 years.

The Revolution had cost more than a million Mexican lives and totally disrupted the country's economy.
