Figures released by ASUR, the operator of Cozumel airport, show the number of passengers through the island terminal was up 1.4% for the last 6 months, compared with 2009. According to the report, published earlier this month, international traffic was particularly strong, up 5.5% in the period May-October 2010, over May-October 2009. |
Although traffic was down in the low season months, the 6 month trend is encouraging for the local tourism industry.
2010 has been a difficult year economically, so to see an increase in visitors is testimony to the quality of Cozumel as a tourism destination. The news also comes as the island sees the highest number of weekly cruise ship arrivals for 6 months. This week it's expected that some 27 ships will arrive to Cozumel with an estimated 81,000 passengers. |
