Hearts Abroad wrapped up a successful one day event to raise awareness of autism in Cozumel on Saturday.

Ariana Iacobucci, founder of the non-profit organization and mother of a child with autism, said that the conference was a "dream come true".

Autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that usually appears in children before the age of 3.

60 parents, therapists and teachers from Cozumel attended the event and participated in discussions about what autism is and how it can be identified and diagnosed.

The event was presented by two Colorado special education teachers who explained some of the most effective classroom interventions for helping children with autism and showed classroom video clips to illustrate techniques.

Hearts Abroad is a recently established non-profit based in Fort Collins, Colorado in the United States. This was organization’s first project and they hope to expand their reach to communities in the Middle East by the end of the year too.
