The Cozumel Humane Society today announced a novel idea to find new homes for abandoned dogs.

Each week they will parade their canine companions downtown in an effort to find responsible owners to adopt them.

The Society, a non-profit organization set up by a group of Mexicans, Canadians and Americans in Cozumel, said orphaned kittens and puppies would also be on show in a special double-decker stroller.

The Society has a center attended by veterinarian staff and their objective is to help the dogs and cats of Cozumel Island.

Their long term goal is to have the local authorities establish a humane dog and cat population control program, based on education and prevention of litters.

The pet parade will take place every Sunday evening between 6.30pm and 8.30pm in the main plaza downtown.
