New Cozumel Hotels Hope To Boost Tourism

Two major new hotel names will soon be coming to Cozumel in a move that is hoped to boost tourism on the island.

AMResorts announced, last month, that they will be bringing their signature Secrets and Sunscape brands to the island by completely refurbishing several existing resorts.

Secrets hotels are aimed mainly at couples and Sunscape at family and friends, both brands already have hotels on the Mexican Caribbean coast nearby.

The Mexican hotel chain AMResorts — part of the Pennsylvania-based Apple Leisure Group that owns airline USA3000 and package vacation company, Apple Vacations — said they are spending over $10 million to take over and convert the neighboring Sabor, Aura and Regency hotels into two new resorts called Secrets Aura Cozumel and Sunscape Sabor Cozumel.

In an exclusive interview, Alejandro Zozaya, president and CEO of AMResorts, told This is Cozumel, "The objective is to increase the number of flights and passengers to the destination, not only from Apple Vacations, but from all our commercial partners, including wholesalers and airlines from Mexico, USA, Canada and Europe".

Zozaya said work has already started on the upgrading of back of house areas and the refurbishing of hotel rooms will proceed in phases.

The new Secrets Aura Cozumel will officially be launched in December 2012. It will include 15 new rooms on the ocean front or with ocean views, and 174 redecorated rooms.

Improvements are also being made to existing restaurant areas and a new shopping area will be added in January 2013.

330 rooms will feature at the Sunscape Sabor Cozumel which will officially launch mid-January 2013. Work there also includes new restaurants and the remodeling of rooms, which will be fully completed by April 2013.

The two newly rebranded hotels will share a spa with a hydrotherapy circuit and fitness center to be completed by mid-March 2013.

AMResorts said prices will be more expensive than those at the existing Sabor, Aura and Regency hotels as the product quality is being improved to bring it in line with their hotels in the Riviera Maya nearby. They added that they will honor reservations already made at the old resorts.
