Cozumel is well-known for beautiful white sand beaches, friendly locals and underwater marvels, so you might wonder why anyone would have to endure it.

However, that's what more than 3,200 athletes are doing this year as they take part in the endurance races that the island is fast becoming famous for.

Three arduous international triathlons are being held on the island this year, which see some of the world's toughest atheletes battle it out as they swim, cycle and run their way round Cozumel.

Cozumel will put the clocks back an hour in 3 weekends' time, along with the rest of Mexico.

However, the clocks don't change in the U.S.A. and Canada until a week later, so there will be 7 days when the island is one hour behind Central Time and two hours behind Eastern Time.

This is especially important for cruise ship passengers, as their ship time may be an extra hour ahead of local island time when they arrive.

Despite damp weather, islanders came out in force last night to celebrate Mexican Independence, with the island's mayor making an emotional grito at City Hall.

The Mexican president and other political leaders across the country also made their cries, as is tradition every year on the night before Independence Day.

American Airlines confirmed, this week, that they will start new non-stop flights five times a week between Miami and Cozumel.

Dori Robau Alvarez, spokesperson for the airline, told This is Cozumel the tickets will go on sale as soon as the route receives final approval from the Mexican authorities.

Despite being out of the news for almost two years, local developer, Mayaland Resorts, confirmed this week that their dream to build a mega resort on the island has not been abandoned.

In an exclusive interview with This is Cozumel, company president, Fernando Barbachano, said the idea is the "corner-stone" of the island's future, but will only go ahead if the right investors are found for an "exclusive, high end" development that respects the environment.
