Cruise Ship Time

Cozumel time

The new time zone in the south-east of Mexico means time differences are now, well... different!

If you're arriving on a cruise ship then understanding the difference between ship time and local time can be very important, especially if you've booked one of our Cozumel tours.

And, it is even more important around March and November each year, when the U.S.A. moves to and from Daylight Savings Time but Mexico's South-Eastern Time Zone, where Cozumel is located, does not.

Different cruise lines have different ways of deciding what time their ships take.

Carnival and Royal Caribbean (RCCL) cruise ships usually go with the time of their homeport and stick with it, whereas Norwegian cruise ships change their onboard time during the voyage, to match the local port they are arriving to.

The itineraries cruise lines give passengers display ship times, so cruisers should remember this isn't necessarily the same as Cozumel time.

Cozumel is on U.S. Central Time from March 8 to October 31, 2015 (during U.S. Daylight Saving Time) but it is on U.S. Eastern Time from November 1, 2015 to March 12, 2016 during winter time).

If you're visiting soon on a cruise and are confused, don't worry! Here's a quick reference guide to help you work out what time it is...

Editor's Note: A new federal law was passed in Mexico creating a new time zone for Cozumel and the rest of the state of Quintana Roo. It took effect on February 1, 2015 and the information above has been updated accordingly.
