This was the traditional Kii’wik market, this week, that started events leading up to some 250 oarsman, in wooden canoes, crossing from the Riviera Maya to Cozumel, and back.

After many delays, much speculation, and considerable expectation, the process to build the new Riviera Maya airport has finally started.

The Mexican government officially invited bids to construct and operate the new airport, on the coast near Cozumel, earlier this week.

The tender process got off to a false start in March, when Mexican President, Felipe Calderón proudly announced it would begin in April, only for it to be postponed again within days.

In an attempt to attract more Italian tourists, Cozumel's Tourism Promotion Board has signed an agreement with the Italian Chamber of Commerce, reported local newspaper, El Semanario, this week.

Mexico's Federal Competition Comission (CFC) confirmed to local press, this week, that it is investigating possible anti-competitive practices on the ferry route between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen.

After much speculation, the new Riviera Maya airport project was officially launched in Tulum, on Monday, by Mexican President, Felipe Calderón.

The project on the coast near Cozumel, will need an investment of some $254 million.

It will give visitors arriving to Cozumel a third choice of airport, in addition to Cancun airport and the island's own international terminal.
