Authorities plan to sink a 30 metre (100 ft) ex-Mexican naval ship to provide a new wreck for snorkeling and diving in Cozumel, reported Mexican daily Por Esto! last week. The paper said the ship will be located off Playa Casitas, at the north end of the downtown seafront. This means it will be outside of the Marine Park, avoiding any ecological problems and making it easily accessible for locals and tourists alike.

The paper said the plan had been confirmed by Gustavo Ortega, Mayor of Cozumel and Félix González Canto, State Governor. They said that plans were also in place to return lost sand to Cozumel's downtown beaches.
