Cozumel's Municipal Government announced last week that it plans to spend 350 million pesos (US $33 million) on public works in 2007.

Ricardo Espinosa Freyre, Director of Public Works, said they hoped to maintain the same high level of investment as seen this year.

In 2006, a little over 350 million pesos has been spent on public works and infrastructure, almost 3 times as much as in 2005, said Mr Espinosa.

Amongst the major public works projects completed recently in Cozumel was the new airport road, with improved drainage designed to prevent flooding in low lying areas. Mexican President, Vicente Fox Quesada, officially inaugurated the spiffy new avenue when he visited the island earlier in the year.

Separate from this news, Mexican news website Noticaribe also reported last week that the State Port Authority plans to spend 40 million pesos (US $3.8 million) on improvements to Cozumel's piers and port in 2007 and that the State Tourism Department is putting US $1 million into promoting Cancun, the Riviera Maya and Cozumel.
