Cozumel has won the title of Top Western Caribbean Cruise Port for 2017, announced cruise reviews and information site, CruiseCritic, this week.

The "Cruisers' Choice" award is based solely on ratings provided by travelers who have taken cruises in the last year and written reviews on the site.

Cozumel fought off tough competition from 10 other ports of call in the region, including Grand Cayman and Montego Bay.

"I wouldn't be disappointed to return [to Cozumel] cruise after cruise", said one reviewer, adding "Every time I've visited, I've returned to the ship thinking, 'Best day ever.'"

Ports have to have a minimum number of member reviews and ratings in their particular category to qualify to enter the annual awards.

More than five million people, from first-time cruisers to avid cruise fans, visit CruiseCritic each month, according to the website's about pages.
