lifestyle, travel This is Cozumel

There are now more passenger ferries between Playa del Carmen on the mainland and Cozumel Island and average fare prices have come down, with the introduction a new ferry company.

Barcos Caribe started operating in February, joining the two existing companies Mexico Waterjets and Ultramar.

Between the three companies, they now have departures from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel from 6.30am to 11pm, and from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen from 5.30am to 10pm.

Ferries leave pretty much on the hour, every hour, with some extra services at half past certain hours. This means you will never need to wait more than 30-60 minutes for a ferry.

Prices have also come down and one-way fares now only cost $10-12 for adults and $5-7 for children (depending which company you travel with).

The boats are comfortable and make the crossing in about 40 minutes. All have refreshment services and some even have free wifi internet.
