More visitors arrive by air

Visits to Cozumel continued to rise, last month, as passenger numbers at the island's airport jumped 28% compared with the same month in 2013.

The news comes shortly after a new record was set for the number of cruise passengers visiting the island in the first six months of this year.

ASUR, the owner of Cozumel's international airport, said 22,442 passengers came through the terminal in October 2014, compared with 17,526 in October 2013.

The numbers will be welcomed by many local politicians and businesses that are seeking to diversify the island's economy by attracting more people to stay in hotels and relying less on cruise tourism.

To this end, big investments are being made in large hotels and plans still exist for a mega-resort on the island's east coast.
