Cozumel is dressing up in stars and stripes to celebrate United States' Independence Day, tomorrow.

Tourists, locals and the island's American community are looking forward to a special event downtown that will include live music, local crafts and plenty of food and drink.

The festivities will take place from 12 noon to 7pm in the main downtown plaza next to the ferry pier (Parque Benito Juarez).

11 restaurants will be participating by serving special dishes and there will even be an opportunity to taste lionfish.

The event is organised every year by local tourism bodies in cooperation with a group of island businesses to honor the history, culture and traditions of Mexico's northern neighbor.

Independence Day - commonly known as July Fourth - is a federal holiday in the US. It marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
