Cozumel saw a jump in visitors in June, as the number of passengers through the island's airport increased 21% compared with the same month last year.

The news comes just a day after the Mexican government also announced a rise of 5% in international visitors arriving to the country by air in the first 5 months of 2012.

ASUR, the company that owns Cozumel airport, said, today, that a total of 43,587 passengers came through the terminal in June 2012, compared with 36,020 in June 2011.

A large part of the rise came from domestic visitors, as Mexicans take advantage of new direct flights to the island from the country's capital.

However, international traffic was also up 12%, from 33,072 passengers in June 2011 to 36,990 in June 2012.

The increased arrivals are helping hotel occupancy figures on the island, with many tourism businesses reporting a good start to the summer vacation season.

At This is Cozumel, we've already seen a substantial increase in the number of reservations for Cozumel tours made through our site in the second quarter of 2012 compared with the same 3 months last year.

Many hotels and resorts are also upbeat. Tom Fryer, owner of the boutique Hotel Flamingo downtown, said, "We're very pleased with how things are going this season so far, vacationers clearly understand Cozumel is a great summer destination for 2012."

According to the Mexican government report released yesterday, the USA sent the largest number of tourists to Mexico between January and May this year, with more than 2.6 million Americans making the trip across the border.

Canadians were next in line after the USA, sending 954,000 visitors to Mexico in the same period.

There were also significant increases in tourists arriving from other countries further afield, including the United Kingdom, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia.

The figures will please Mexican politicians and tourism officials as they demonstrate international tourists have not been put off from making a visit, despite some negative media coverage and a difficult financial climate.
