Cozumel airport operator, ASUR, announced, on Tuesday, that the number of passengers through the island terminal was up 10.2% in September 2011 compared with the same month last year.

The increase was driven by a leap in the number of domestic passengers flying to the island.

The number of passengers arriving on Mexican flights almost doubled, from 2,891 in September 2010 to 5,672 last month.

This rise more than compensated for the 17.8% decrease in international passenger arrivals, which dropped from 8,860 in September 2010 to 7,283 in September 2011.

September to November is low season for overseas tourists to the island, so although the decline will be noticed by local businesses it is not unexpected at this time of year.

The rise in domestic visitors will be welcomed as good news for Cozumel, as local tourism businesses and politicians seek to further diversify the island's tourist base.

The domestic increase was due mainly to new direct flights from Mexico City to Cozumel launched in June by Mexican airline, Interjet.
