An important agreement was signed, on Monday, that allows plans for the new luxury Cozumel marina to finally move forward after years of deadlock.

The main part of the marina is already contructed and this last step means it can at last be connected to the sea.

The new harbor is next to the existing Caleta marina, a few miles south of downtown, and needs access to the sea through property belonging to the neighboring Hotel Presidente.

The marina developer, the Mexican Government's National Tourism Fund (FONATUR), has taken some 30 months to arrive at the agreement with the Hotel Presidente.

They announced they will start work again next week and push on rapidly to complete the project, although they haven't yet named a completion date.

The outgoing Mayor of Cozumel, Juan Carlos González Hernández, said the project is already 90% complete and will receive a total investment of $33.5 million by the time it is finished.

It's hoped that the Cozumel marina will attract a new tourist market to the island and create as many as 5,000 jobs, directly and indirectly.
