ASUR, the authority that runs Cozumel Airport, said last week that more passengers are arriving to the island on domestic flights than before.

Figures published by the authority show a 29.1 per cent increase in domestic passengers in June 2008, compared with June 2007.

The number of international passengers hardly changed, however, meaning the overall increase for the month was 2.4 per cent.

Despite the relative surge in domestic passengers, international passengers are still by far the biggest users of the airport.

In June 2008, 48,137 international passengers used the airport, outnumbering their domestic counterparts by almost 6 times.

ASUR (Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste, S.A.B. de C.V.) is a Mexican airport operator with concessions to operate, maintain and develop the airports of Cancun, Merida, Cozumel, Villahermosa, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Huatulco, Tapachula and Minatitlan in the southeast of Mexico.

The company is listed both on the Mexican stock exchange and on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), where it trades under the symbol ASR.
