lifestyle, travel This is Cozumel

Following rumors earlier this month, the Trump Organization said yesterday that it has, at least for now, shelved plans for a controversial new development on the island.

Trump's spokesperson, Selma Langer, told This is Cozumel that they were "looking at a project in Cozumel, but the project is not being pursued at this particular time". She declined to give further details.

For well over a year, talk of the project had been rife on the island, with plans being discussed openly. However, this is the first time the Trump Organization has officially confirmed the project was under consideration.

It has caused controversy with environmentalists, who point out that the north-east part of the island where the development was planned is home to endangered flora and fauna, needing to be protected, not built on.

Trump's proposed luxury real estate development was described by insiders as an "island within an island", a massive closed away beach resort, complete with golf course and private air strip.
