The US and British governments updated their travel advice for Mexico yesterday, saying it is safe for travel.

In an almost simultaneous announcement, Carnival cruise lines said they would resume some calls in Cozumel at the end of May.

The changes will be welcomed as a victory by almost 3,000 "friends of Cozumel", who signed a petition to the CDC urging them to update their travel advice this week.

The US government's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said with the assistance of the Mexican authorities, they had obtained a "more complete picture" of the outbreak.

They downgraded their advice against non-essential travel to Mexico, to a 'precaution' and said that the "risk of severe disease ... now appears to be less than originally thought."

The British government's Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said "We have updated our travel advice for Mexico. We no longer advise against all but essential travel to the region".
