Quirky Mexican-Dutch Art | Print |  Email
May 16, 2008

A quirky exhibition by Dutch artist of international renown, Jackie Sleper, opened at the Island Museum last week.

The artworks are inspired by, and dedicated to, Mexico and the Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo.

Cozumel is the second location for Dulce y Amargo or 'Sweet and Bitter'.

The island exhibition forms part of a Mexican tour by the artist throughout 2008 and 2009.

Jackie has always been fascinated by Mexico and Frida Kahlo, for whom she has a profound admiration.

In 2005, art historian and art critic, Matty Roca, invited her to Kahlo's homeland to depict her vision of the country.

Over the course of two years Jackie spent many months in Mexico, where she created a host of her works.

Photography, painting and mixed media.

Jackie said, "Matty Roca became a dear friend. She showed me Mexico. I took in everything around me, spoke with lots of people and, especially, got a sense of the country".

Surprising concepts.

Her modern works are at times reminiscent of Rivera, Orozco, Tamayo and Pollock.

They are characterised by combinations of photography and painting, and the use of mixed media.

In addition to paintings, Jackie creates objects that incorporate a variety of multiple materials, which she transforms into wholly new and surprising concepts.

This exhibition is on from May 9th to June 20th, 2008, at the Island Museum on the seafront between 4th and 6th streets.
