Two new sculptures were officially inaugurated by Gustavo Ortega Joaquín, Mayor of Cozumel, at a ceremony last week. "Turtle and Children Playing" and "Girl and Turtle" are the new monuments on the seafront downtown. The art forms part of a program aimed at recovering Cozumel's "traditional, picturesque, historical image."

The Mayor said that more money from the program had been invested in a new cycle path and palm trees along the boulevard in the north of the island.

Funds have also been used to renovate the monument of a swallow - the island's symbol - near the airport, and for street repairs and burying cables on the seafront.

Continiuing the trend of new public sculptures, a bust of General Rafael E. Melgar will be unveiled soon at Punta Langosta cruise ship terminal. Melgar was State Governor between 1935 and 1940 when the seafront avenue was built. The road was named Avenida Rafael E. Melgar after him.

"Turtle and Children Playing" can be found on the seafront by Calle 4 and "Girl and Turtle" is a little further north by Calle 12.
