The razzmatazz for Cozumel Carnival 2008 started last Friday, when the aspiring Carnival Kings and Queens where presented at the island's Moby Dick hall.
The 6 candidates were selected by the Carnival committee as outstanding participants from previous Mardi Gras celebrations.

Andrea Chacón Núñez, Melina Laporta Castro and Nora Gabriela Castillo Leal are competing to be Cozumel's 2008 Carnival Queen. Alejandro Martín Gaeta, Francis Reynosa Barrera and Enrique Alferez Kantún will battle it out to be King.
The competitors will perform at Carnival build-up events and are judged on factors including costumes and dancing. Thousands of dollars will be awarded to the nominees to help them fund their outfits.
The first pre-events and performances will start on January 5, 2007. The King and Queen are then elected and finally crowned at the official Carnival 2008 Grand Opening on January 23, 2007.
The opening will mark the beginning of a mad week of music and mayhem, with fabulous seafront parades and performances across downtown.
