Mayan history in Cozumel
Mayan priest at the ceremony.
Local Mayan history was remembered and honored at a traditional ceremony in Cozumel last Wednesday.

The Saása´Al Símil - 'Plea for Forgiveness' - took place on the terrace at the Quintana Roo Park.

The ceremony was conducted by a Mayan priest and attended by Gustavo Ortega Joaquín, the island's Mayor.

Three sacred Ya´Axché - Ceiba trees - were planted as part of the proceedings and traditional Maya Pax music was played.

The event was used to give thanks to past Mayan mayors and the heroes of the 1847 War of the Castes in the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula, in which Mayans fought for equality against the ruling Spanish descendents.
