The eye of Hurricane Dean may pass about 130 miles (210 km) to the south of Cozumel, according to an update at 10am Cozumel time from the National Hurricane Center in the United States.

The Center predicted the storm would make landfall on the Mexican coast in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Predicted path (NOAA).

If the category 4 hurricane continues on its current predicted path Cozumel Island and the nearby tourist resorts of Playa del Carmen and Cancun on the coast will avoid the worst of the Dean's wrath.

Islanders are well prepared but still cautious. Gustavo Ortega Joaquín, the Mayor of Cozumel, noted yesterday that although the path now looks less menacing, locals shouldn't be complacent.

This is Cozumel is providing regular updates and you can also monitor the storm's progress on the National Hurricane Center's website.

If you have a vacation or flight booked in Cozumel this week we recommend you consult with your travel agent or tour operator.
