Cozumel News - 2007 Archive
Aug 08, 2007
Many visitors to the island head straight for downtown and maybe a beach club.

If you have half a day to spare or more, hiring a car and visiting the island's east coast is a great alternative.

Cozumel coast
Playa San Martín.

Long unspoilt white sand beaches, rock formations and great water-side bars and restaurants await you.

You can reach the other side by driving about 20 minutes directly east of downtown on the cross-island transversal highway.

Alternatively, take the coast highway south out of town, drive round the south of Cozumel and arrive at what locals fondly call the 'Other Side' - el Otro Lado.

Cozumel reggae
Freedom in Paradise.
Stop at the Freedom in Paradise beach bar and restaurant if you feel like listening to some reggae in a hammock on the beach.

Don't miss the beauty of Playa San Martín, look out towards Cuba, only 60 miles (100km) away across the horizon of the Caribbean Sea.

El Mirador lookout offers incredible rock formations and great photo opportunties. Don't forget your camera!
Cozumel views
El Mirador lookout.

You're spoilt for choice for food, with bars and restaurants such as Coconuts, perched on top of a cliff.

Or enjoy fresh seafood at El Galeón, next to a long stretch of sugar white sand beach at Playa San Martín.

Renting a car is a great way to get to the Other Side independently and really enjoy all it has to offer.

Book a Cozumel car rental now!

IMPORTANT: be extremely careful when entering the water on Cozumel's east coast, although the sea may look inviting there are many strong currents. Ask advice before entering the water and only swim in safe, sheltered areas.
