The 2007 Cozumel Miss Independency competition opened last week.

The event - organized by the Municipality for the 3rd year running - is part of celebrations to celebrate Mexican Independence.

Last year's finalists.

The final for the competition will be held the week before Mexican Independence Day in September.

Registrations for participants will close at the end of this month, then, during the month of August, the girls will learn how apply make-up and catwalk like models, as well as study Mexican culture.

The Municipality said that entrants must be of Mexican nationality and have at least 5 years living in Cozumel. They must also be between 17 and 24 years old and at least 1.50 meters (4ft 11in) tall.

The winner will head all the official celebrations for Mexican Independence in Cozumel in September, including civil ceremonies and military parades.

They will also have the honor of accompanying the Mayor in the traditional Grito de Dolores - an emotional speech that commerorates a call for Mexicans to rebel against the Spanish, made by priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in 1810.

Visit our Public Holidays and Events section to learn more about Mexican Independence Day on September 16th.
