Cozumel News - 2006 Archive
Nov 29, 2006
Revolution day, Cozumel 2006.
Bright dancers.
Islanders celebrated Mexican Revolution Day last week with colorful patriotic parades along the seafront to Cozumel's City Hall.

The events marked the 96th anniversary of the 1910 Mexican Revolutionary Movement.

On November 20, 1910, Francisco I. Madero called Mexicans to arms against the dictatorship of General Porfirio Díaz Mori, who had been in power for some 30 years.

The ensuing battles and struggles for power lasted almost 10 years. A revolutionary period when alliances and leaders kept changing, and attempts at stable government failed.

Relative stability was finally reached in 1920, with the presidency of Álvaro Obregón who stayed in power for 4 years.

The Revolution had cost more than a million Mexican lives and totally disrupted the country's economy.

Today, islanders remember the lives of lost heroes and celebrate the Revolution with traditional costumes, patriotic events and displays by childrens groups and the emergency services.
