Carnival Fever Begins

A new Cozumel Carnival consultation group met for the first time at the end of last month.

Paloma Cázares Ruiz, spokesperson for the Carnival organizers, said the group's advice is important since it is made up of islanders who have a been heavily involved in previous years' events.

The full program with confirmed dates is also now available for Carnival 2009, the main parades will take place from February 21 to 24, 2009.

Remembering The Dead

Cozumel and the rest of Mexico remembered the Day of the Dead - El Día de los Muertos - on the weekend.

The event is held on the first and second day of November each year to celebrate the lives of deceased family members and ancestors.

Although sometimes misconstrued as being morbid by other cultures, the events in Mexico are full of joy and remembrance.

56,000 Ton Artificial Reef

A massive new artificial reef was officially unveiled off the coast of Cozumel this week.

Francine Cousteau, president of the Cousteau Society and widow of undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau, visited the island as its "godmother".

The new underwater attraction weighs more than 10 Boeing 737 jets. It is made of 56,000 tons (50.8 million kilograms) of salvaged concrete taken from the Puerta Maya cruise ship pier destroyed by Hurricane Wilma in 2005.

New $50 Million Cruise Pier

Cozumel’s largest cruise ship terminal, Puerta Maya, has been renovated with an investment of more than $50 million.

Cruise ship company Carnival, the pier’s owners, announced last week that the new "cruise center" will officially re-open this Thursday.

Ready For Continental Celebration

Cozumel is getting ready to mark the anniversary of the European discovery of the Americas on October 12.

Called the Día de la Raza, or 'Day of Race', in Mexico, the holiday is commemorated by millions across Latin America and Spain.

'Columbus Day' is a related holiday in the United States, commemorated mainly by Italian-Americans in celebration of their heritage.
