A Hit With Brits

The number of Brits coming to Cozumel on vacation continues to increase.

Earlier this month, British travel operator, First Choice, doubled the frequency of its London flights to the island and added a new route from Manchester in the north of England too.

Enterprises In Paradise

The second in a series about successful island businesses run by non-Mexicans.

This article looks at the Hotel Flamingo, a fashionable boutique hotel in downtown Cozumel.

The hotel was in dire need of some tender loving care back in 1996, when Tom Fryer bought it to live his island dream.

After making the move from his home in the San Francisco Bay area of California, Tom had to work hard to build it up to the successful business he has today.

Seafront Supermarket Giant

Giant Mexican supermarket chain, Comercial Mexicana, will open a new 'Mega' store in downtown Cozumel later this year.

Work on the seafront site is already well under way. The construction will have a total area the size of 5 football fields.

Quirky Mexican-Dutch Art
May 16, 2008

 

A quirky exhibition by Dutch artist of international renown, Jackie Sleper, opened at the Island Museum last week.

The artworks are inspired by, and dedicated to, Mexico and the Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo.

Cozumel is the second location for Dulce y Amargo or 'Sweet and Bitter'.

The island exhibition forms part of a Mexican tour by the artist throughout 2008 and 2009.

Trump Shelves Cozumel Plan
May 15, 2008

Following rumors earlier this month, the Trump Organization said yesterday that it has, at least for now, shelved plans for a controversial new development on the island.

Trump's spokesperson, Selma Langer, told This is Cozumel that they were "looking at a project in Cozumel, but the project is not being pursued at this particular time". She declined to give further details.

Pilgrims Paddle To Cozumel

Following last year's success, the second annual 'Sacred Mayan Crossing' will take place at the end of the month.

Thirty 26-foot canoes, each with a crew of four to six, will paddle from the mainland to Cozumel and back.

The 3 day event re-creates ancient ritual pilgrimages undertaken by the original inhabitants of Yucatán to Polé (Xcaret) and then on by canoe to Cuzamil (Cozumel).

'5 De Mayo' Remembered

Mexican's remembered the Battle of Puebla last week, on May 5th.

The 5 de Mayo marks the defeat of the French army in the Mexican city of Puebla in 1862.

Celebrated widely by Mexicans in the United States, the day is not an obligatory federal holiday in Mexico, but voluntary.
