Ready For El Cedral 2008

The small town of El Cedral in the south of Cozumel is getting ready for its popular annual festival.

This year the Festival of El Cedral and the Fiestas of Santa Cruz will be held from Friday, April 25 to Monday, May 5.

Turning Autism Around

Hearts Abroad, a fledgling US healthcare nonprofit from Colorado, has high hopes for the impact they will have in Cozumel.

In June, they will bring an autism expert and a child psychologist to conduct a workshop for social workers, teachers and parents.

Autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that usually appears in children before the age of 3.

In the last 3 years, 6,510 nests were registered and 526,942 baby turtles released under Cozumel's Turtle Protection Program.

Last week, Christopher González Baca, the island's Deputy Director for the Environment, applauded the program's volunteers for working so hard.

Second Homes One-Third Of Properties Sold

Second-home sales accounted for one-third of US real estate transactions in 2007, which is close to historic norms.

This is one of the findings of a survey released last week by the National Association of Realtors (NAR).

King's Cruise To Cozumel

Over 1,000 Elvis Presley fans will come to Cozumel this August, on a special cruise dedicated to the original King of rock'n'roll.

The voyage is being organized by Carnival Cruise Lines and and the St. Louis, Mo.-based Elvis Cruise company.

Jerry Schilling, longtime friend and confidante of the late Elvis will host the trip, which is officially licensed by Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc.

The pros and cons of a new nature reserve in Cozumel were debated at a public 'workshop' meeting last week.

The Municipal and State governments have proposed a protected coastal and sea zone around the north and east of the island.
